“An attractive nose guides you to the happiness of a smile, and the life in someone’s pretty eyes…”
Ted Cook, M.D.
Rhinoplasty is a procedure that reshapes the nose. It enhances your facial harmony and makes your nose proportionate to the rest of your face and body. It can also correct any impaired breathing caused by structural defects. The entire staff at Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are proud to assist residents in Virginia with rhinoplasty.
There are many reasons why people receive rhinoplasty. They may be unhappy with the appearance of their nose and rhinoplasty will help change its look and enhance your beautiful features. The second reason people receive rhinoplasty is they have breathing issues, they need to correct a birth defect, or damage from an accident.
Why Rhinoplasty?
- Straighten the nose.
- Redefine nasal shape, width, position, and projection.
- Reshape nasal bridge contour.
- Improve nasal airway.
- Adjunct to sinus management.
- Adjunct to sino-nasal headaches management.
- Component to smell control.
- Component of nasal allergy management.
The nose is the centerpiece of your face and complements the rest of your features. It becomes a background feature, leading to your eyes and smile. Rhinoplasty surgery can be combined with other nasal procedures that may have functional importance. These other procedures include septoplasty to straighten the internal airway, nasal valve or stenosis procedures to brace, pinch, or collapse nasal structure, and turbinate procedures to help open the nasal passage.
We start the procedure by administering you a local anesthesia. We then either use a closed procedure where incisions are hidden inside of the nose or an open procedure where incisions are made across the narrow strip of tissue that separates your nostrils. We will discuss your options before the surgery.
We will then go through your incisions and gently raise the cartilage, which allows us access to reshape the structure of your nose. For overly large noses, we reduce the size by removing bone or cartilage. Once the underlying structure of the nose is sculpted to the desired shape that we determine before surgery, we redrape the tissue and close the incisions.
Every nose is unique. For this reason, we use photographs and computer morphing to map out and plan your procedure. We do this in close conjunction with each patient so that information, ideas, and plans can be carefully coordinated and shared. This process also helps define expectations and outcomes for a beautiful and well-breathing nose.
